DSU struck first and took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the third inning, but Avila scored a run during the third and fourth to pull in even.

Junior left fielder Tiffany Morgan doubled to center to bring in catcher Brianna Grayson to put the Blue Hawks back on top in the sixth, but the Eagles quickly retaliated with a run by first baseman Madeline Mayfield to tie it back up.

At the top of the seventh, second baseman Monique Yslas hit a lead-off double. With no outs and two runners on base, first baseman Rebecca Lopez reached first on a fielder’s choice, which scored Yslas. Lopez went 1 for 3 with two runs and a RBI. Grayson finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and scored a run.

Junior pitcher Janell LaRont got the start for the Blue Hawks and lasted four innings, gave up three hits, two runs and struck out four. Regan Lawrence and McKenna Kostelecky each came in for relief and combined for three innings, one hit and no runs.

For Avila, Lexie Worden went 5 1/3 innings as the starter, allowed seven hits and three earned runs. Reliever Jennifer Hammonds was tagged with the loss as she allowed three hits and one run in 1 2/3 innings.

Center fielder Morgan Greenwood went 2 for 3 and drove in three RBI.

The second game featured less scoring.

On a 2-2 count in the second inning, designated hitter Lindsey Sullivan drove in the first run of the game to give DSU a lead which it never gave up. The Blue Hawks extended their lead 2-0 after the third inning.

The Lady Bison picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth — as a Regan Lawrence pitch went passed catcher Grayson to advance runners and allowed second baseman LeNae Sanchez to score — to make it a one-run game.

DSU responded in the seventh inning as Alex Vargas drove in LaRont on a single to give the Blue Hawks a little breathing room and secure the 3-1 win.

LaRont went 2 for 4, while Lopez and Yslas scored the team’s other two runs. Lawrence pitched a complete game and allowed four hits, no earned runs and struck out a season-high 10.

OBU’s McKenzie Jones pitched seven innings for and gave up nine hits, three runs, walked three and struck out three.

DSU closes out its week in Tuscon with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Blue Hawks begin with a rematch with the Lady Bison at 11 a.m. and close out the day against Valley City State at 1:30 p.m.
