Bethesda University outlasts DSU

TUSCON, Ariz. — It was a slugfest between the Dickinson State and Bethesda University of Calif., baseball teams as both teams combined for 39 total hits and 23 runs.

In their final game in Tucson, the Blue Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score within one, but the Flames held on for a 12-11 win on Friday.

Through four innings, DSU kept it close and was only down one run, 3-2. But Bethesda unleashed in the top of the fifth and scored six runs.

A wild throw by DSU’s Sam Bisson scored the first two runs of the inning and a triple to deep center by Joshua Perez scored the final two runs of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, DSU scored five runs to close the gap to one, 10-9. On a 2-2 count, catcher Ryan Risse hit a grand slam over the left-field fence to bring in Caleb Burgard, Miles O’Donnell and Bisson. Risse finished 2 for 5 with 5 RBI.

Austin Taft — finished 4 for 6 with two runs — tripled to deep right-center and scored on the next at bat and then Joe Binstock hit a RBI single past the shortstop.

After the Flames scored two runs in the top of the eighth and DSU answered back with two, but couldn’t muster up anymore offense to try and top its opponent.

Chas Allen was credited with the loss after giving up 12 hits, seven earned runs in five innings. Bethesda used four pitchers with starter Bobby Moreno getting the win. Moreno lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and walked four.

All but one batter for DSU, Jordan Tescher, picked up at least one hit.

DSU has its home opening series with a doubleheader against Concordia College (Minn.) at 2 p.m. Thursday at Southside Ballpark.
