DSU splits in final day of Arizona road trip

TUSCON, Ariz. — The Dickinson State softball team’s Tuscon series finale ended in a split.

Oklahoma Baptist University opened with a 10-4 win and the Blue Hawks closed out the doubleheader with a 3-0 shutout over Valley City State.

The Lady Bison only scored one run against DSU on Friday, but their bats were more active Saturday. OBU scored two runs in the bottom of the first after DSU left fielder Justeena Gutierrez bobbled the ball.

The Blue Hawks were steady on offense at first. They scored a run each in innings from the second to the fifth and built a 4-2 lead.

However, the Lady Bison took that lead away permanently by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth.

Raevan Clark finished 4 for 4 with two runs and a RBI, while Dara Gray had two hits and drove in a game-high five RBI.

Hannah Wilbur got the start in the circle for OBU and lasted seven innings, gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out three.

For DSU, four separate batters scored each of the teams four runs —Janell LaRont, Alex Vargas, Brianna Grayson and Regan Lawrence. Lawrence started for the Blue Hawks and finished with nine hits and no earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

LaRont pitched for the final out of the inning before McKenna Kostelecky came in for the sixth. Kostelecky gave up three earned runs on three hits and walked on batter.

Game two was all about the pitching. For the Blue Hawks, LaRont threw a complete game with three hits, no runs and five strikeouts. Valley City’s Lindsey White didn’t have a bad outing either, allowing just one earned run over six innings.

The Blue Hawks didn’t score until the bottom of the third inning when second baseman Kailey Olcott hit a lead-off single. Two at bats later, Olcott stole second and advanced to third on a LaRont single to shallow center. On the next at bat, Monique Yslas grounded out but Olcott scored on the play.

Two innings later DSU scored its final two runs, both off Yslas’ single to left. Justeena Gutierrez and LaRont scored on a misplayed grounder by left fielder Mackenzie Hamre. Yslas went 1 for 3 with a RBI and LaRont, Olcott and Gutierrez scored the team’s three runs.

DSU finished its week in Tuscon 13-3 and returns to the field on Friday. The Blue Hawks travel for a doubleheader against Northwestern College (Iowa) starting at 5 p.m. in Preange City, Iowa.
