Northwestern scores in 6th to edge Dickinson State

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — The Dickinson State softball team finished its successful road series in Tuscon, Ariz., and began its next one Friday at Northwestern College (Iowa).

The game came down to the wire, as the Red Raiders scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to top the Blue Hawks 4-3.

DSU started the game off with two runs as Janell LaRont, the reigning Frontier Conference pitcher of the week, hit a two-run homerun. But Northwestern retaliated in the bottom of the first as shortstop Alex Price ripped a two-run homer.

The game remained stagnant until the sixth inning when designated hitter Lindsey Sullivan grounded out to second to score Rebecca Lopez.

The Red Raiders tied the game as designated hitter Morgan Means doubled to center to drive in a run and took the win an at-bat later as left fielder Kara Nonnemacher grounded to third base and Means reached home on an error.

For DSU, LaRont went 1 for 1 with a run and two RBI. She pitched two innings, allowed two runs, two hits and struck out three. Lopez finished 1 for 3 with a run and Monique Yslas picked up the team’s other run.

Price helped Northwestern to its victory with two RBI and a run, while Morgan finished the game 1 for 1 and added a run and RBI and picked up two walks. Keely Bracelin got the start for the Red Raiders and lasted four innings, struck out six and allowed two runs.

Kayla Foresman was credited with the win and DSU’s Regan Lawrence picked up the loss and gave up three hits, one earned run and struck out two.
