Morningside takes a pair of wins from DSU

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — On its second series of the weekend, the Dickinson State softball team dropped a pair of games to Morningside College (Iowa).

The Mustangs swept the Blue Hawks 2-1 in 12 innings and 4-3 on Saturday.

Game one featured strong pitching performances by DSU’s Regan Lawrence and Morningside’s Jordan Johnson, who both threw complete games.

The Blue Hawks struck first in the top of the second inning as leadoff hitter Brianna Grayson tripled to right field and scored on the next at bat when Rebecca Lopez reached base on a fielder’s choice.

Morningside didn’t generate any offense until the bottom of the seventh inning when third baseman Kristina Neumann hit a RBI sacrifice fly to drive in Elin Landgren.

At the bottom of the 12th with two outs and no one on base, Johnson reached first on a misplayed grounder by shortstop Monique Yslas and advanced to third base after designated hitter Rachel Koch singled to center. Johnson scored on the next at bat as center fielder McKenzie Anderson singled to left field.

Lawrence lasted 11 2/3 innings with no runs on 10 hits and struck out six. Johnson, along with the game-winning run, pitched 12 innings, gave up one run on 10 hits and struck out five.

The second game also came down to the bottom of the final inning. With DSU up 3-2, Morningside scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the sweep.

Neumann singled to center to drive in Marissa Childress and Kati Steffen hit a single on the last at bat, which scored Landgren. Steffan went 4 for 4 with two RBI and Neumann drove in two RBI and a run after going 2 for 4.

Morningside pitcher Kayla Salonen pitched a complete game with three runs on eight hits. Tiffany Morgan got the start for the Blue Hawks and lasted five innings, allowed nine hits and two runs before Lawrence came in for the last 1 2/3 innings.
