Blue Hawks top Trojans, Jamestown

JAMESTOWN — The Dickinson State softball team proved why it was worth being named the No. 1 seed of the NAIA Unaffiliated/North Star-Frontier Conference Tournament.

The Blue Hawks blanked out No. 8-seeded Dakota State (S.D.) 9-0 and beat host team No. 3 seed University of Jamestown 6-2 in the second round on Friday.

Starting pitcher Regan Lawrence —reigning Frontier Conference Pitcher of the Week — threw a one-hit shutout, while she struck out four and walked one.

Dickinson took a modest 2-0 lead in the first inning after catcher Brianna Grayson — finished 2 for 3 with three RBI — hit a two RBI single to right field. But the Blue Hawks busted its lead wide open an inning later with seven unanswered runs.

Rebecca Lopez started the offensive surge with a two RBI-double bringing in Kailey Olcott and Justeena Gutierrez and scored on the next at-bat after stealing home on a Dakota State error. Lopez went 1 for 2 with a double, two RBI and two runs.

Lindsay Sullivan singled to right to drive Monique Yslas home and Dickinson State scored two more runs on the next two at-bats. Sullivan was 1 for 3 with a run and RBI.

The Blue Hawks knocked Dakota State starting pitcher Katie Slibowski out of the game after allowing nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits over 1 1/3 innings. Rachel Hughes came in for damage control and gave up two hits and struck out three batters.

During the second game, Dickinson State took on Jamestown with the winner guaranteeing a spot in the semifinals.

After DSU took a slight 2-1 lead after the first inning, the game remained stagnant until the bottom of the fourth.

Kailey Olcott hit a solo home run to center on the first pitch she saw and Lopez doubled deep to right-center to drive in two runs and advanced to third on the throw. Yslas hit a sacrifice fly which brought Lopez home. Lopez went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI and Olcott finished 1 for 3 with her homer, a run and RBI.

McKenzie Kenobbie, Gutierrez and Vargas were the other Blue Hawks to drive runs for the team.

Tiffany Morgan got the start in the circle for DSU and gave up nine hits and a run each in the first and last innings. Opposite Morgan was Mandy Thiessen who also threw a complete game with nine hits, six runs (five earned), four strike outs and two walks.

Emily Newman drove in the Jimmies’ first run in the first after reaching base on a bobbled ball by Lindsay Sullivan and Connie Miller scored in the seventh after Courtney Van den Bussche singled to third base.

DSU plays University of Great Falls (Mont.) at 11 a.m. today.
