Blue Hawks softball edge Great Falls
JAMESTOWN — The Dickinson State softball team added to its win streak with another victory during the NAIA Unaffiliated/North Star-Frontier Conference Tournament on Saturday.
The Blue Hawks beat University of Great Falls (Mont.) 3-0 to move on to the championship game today.
Regan Lawrence threw her second shutout of the playoffs. She allowed three hits and struck out eight over seven innings.
Though DSU took the win, Great Falls pitcher Kelley Van Blaricom didn’t make it easy. The starting pitcher gave up just two earned runs, two hits and struck out four.
However, the Blue Hawks made their hits count.
Third baseman Alex Vargas hit a home run to left field on a 0-0 count in the fourth inning to give her team its permanent lead. In the sixth, first baseman Lindsay Sullivan reached base on a missed catch by catcher Kelli O’Brien which also allowed Rebecca Lopez and Vargas to score.
Vargas finished 1 for 2 with a solo home run, a RBI and scored two runs. Sullivan supplied two RBI and Kailey Olcott knocked in the team’s second hit.
Argos second baseman Regan Rucks was the only multi-hit player of the game and went 2 for 3 at the plate. Left fielder Morgan Robinson picked up the other hit and was 1 for 3.
The Blue Hawks had Saturday to celebrate its win and advancement to the championship game, but they will have to face Great Falls again for an automatic berth in the national tournament at 1 p.m. today.
DSU and Great Falls played each other in last year’s conference championship game. The teams played two games for the title. The Argos took game one 2-1, but the Blue Hawks came back with a 14-2 victory with two six-run innings.
