Coyotes end Blue Hawks’ season with 7-2 victory

CALDWELL, IDAHO — The host team College of Idaho effectively ended the Dickinson State softball team’s season during the 2014 NAIA Opening Round.

The Coyotes capitalized on five DSU errors en route to a 7-2 win during the loser-out game on Tuesday.

College of Idaho posted three runs in the fourth inning on four straight two-out hits. Two of the four hits were for extra bases. McKensie Stanton ripped a RBI single to score Nickayla Skinner, who started the four hit spree with a double to left-center field. Julia Henrie followed with a RBI triple and Paige Gabiola ended the hit spree with a RBI single.

The Coyotes (30-15) scored four more unanswered runs, before DSU’s Alex Vargas hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Blue Hawks (39-15) finished with three hits as Monique Yslas and Janell LaRont each had a hit. Regan Lawrence was charged with the loss after going seven innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) and striking out three.

Skinner was credited with the win. She went seven innings, allowed two runs and struck out seven. Gabiola led all hitters with three hits, while Henrie supplied two hits and scored two runs.
