DSU golf competes in conference championship

MEDORA — Amidst rain and chilling temperatures, the Dickinson State golf teams competed in the North Star Athletic Association Championship meet at Bully Pulpit Golf Course in Medora on Monday.

After the first day of competition, sophomore Jaret Lee leads the Blue Hawk men with an 81, 9-over-par.

Andre Becerra of Bellevue University and Nathan Kapaun and Jacob Rice of the University of Jamestown are tied for first, each shooting a 73.

“In his mind he played real conservative and that enabled him to score well,” head coach Thadd O’Donnell said of Lee. “He said it was the most boring round he’s played because he likes to really get after it, but that’s a course that you need to play conservatively and pick your spots where you want to go after it.”

On the women’s side of the conference meet, Aimee Kittleson currently sits in 12th place after shooting a 90.

“She had ups and downs,” O’Donnell said. “Her second shot was giving her the most trouble. Out there you definitely need to find the fairway because outside the fairway it’s going to be two or three strokes after that.”

Kittleson is followed by Breilyn Riggin (98), Riley Helmick (99), Natalee Hafer (99) and Jace Steier (101). Annie Nelson of Jamestown shot a 71, 1-under-par, giving her an eight-stroke lead over second-place competitor, Danielle Ducklow of Viterbo University.

After the first day of competition, the men’s team sits at the bottom of team scores with a combined total of 334. The women are currently in fifth place, beating out Valley City State’s score of 423 with a combined score of 386. The University of Jamestown leads the men’s teams with a 298 and the women’s teams with 337.

Competition continues Tuesday at 10 a.m.

“A couple ladies weren’t happy … so if they can keep it in play, some of them are going to drop their scores,’ O’Donnell said. “A couple of them had blow up holes where they got an eight or a nine on a hole. If they can eliminate those, they’re back down to where they should be.”
