NDSU to name assistant Richman as head men's basketball coach

FARGO - North Dakota State did not waste time in replacing Saul Phillips. The Bison will name Dave Richman as the next head men’s basketball coach.

NDSU will hold a press conference at 7 tonight in the team room on the lower level of the Fargodome.

Phillips accepted the head position at Ohio University on Saturday night.

Richman was the obvious in-house successor, having spent 11 years at NDSU including the last seven as associate head coach. He worked his way up the ladder first starting as a student assistant coach. The 36-year-old Richman is a Wahpeton, N.D., native and played two years at the North Dakota State College of Science. He graduated from NDSU in 2002 and obtained his master’s degree in 2005 in sport and recreation management.

He already received the endorsement of two returning starters. Both point guard Lawrence Alexander and forward Kory Brown said Monday they would welcome Richman being the next head coach.

Because Richman was be promoted from within, university policy dictates the job did not have to be opened up for a certain period of time.
