Braves limit, dominate Dickinson

MANDAN — The Dickinson High girls basketball team had a slow start against Mandan and was forced to battle the entire game.

The slow start cost them in the end, as the Braves beat the Midgets 61-34 in a West Region game on Thursday.

Dickinson couldn’t get anything going offensively and went 7 for 51 (14 percent) from the field. A majority of the team’s points were earned at the free-throw line. The Midgets sank 20 of its 28 attempts.

Eighth-grader Lexi Jordheim scored almost half the Midgets’ points as she finished with 16 points. Sydney Gangl and Sierra Rohr were the only other players to sink a shot that wasn’t at the free-throw line.

For Mandan, McKayla Howling Wolf and Chealea Peterson tied with a game-high 14 points, while Peterson completed her double-double with 15 rebounds.

The Braves had their troubles shooting as well. Mandan went 23 of 79 (29 percent), but the 28 extra attempts made all the difference.

There’s no break for Dickinson as it returns to the court to host Turtle Mountain at 5:45 p.m. today.
