Patience is a virtue.

The Dickinson High softball team used its patience at the plate to score a combined 20 runs.

The Midgets used their offense prowess to sweep and blank Jamestown 10-0, 10-0 in a West Region doubleheader on Thursday at Gress Softball Complex.

0 Talk about it

“We had to adjust to their pitching,” Dickinson head Bill Butterfield said. “One of the things that we’ve been talking about is getting into the attack mode right away and we did that tonight.”

Dickinson (9-0, 6-0 West Region) had a combined 19 hits and 14 walks in two games. Riana Cooper, a senior infielder, collected four hits and one walk. She said the team was more selective than in the previous seven games.

“We took our time hitting and waited for the pitch we wanted,” she said. “It seemed like everyone did that. We ended up hitting and having a good night at the plate.”

However, it wasn’t just the offense to post a complete game. Pitching and defense didn’t disappoint as the Midgets allowed six hits and committed one error.

Dickinson sophomore Madison Jahner threw her second no-hitter of the season. She pitched five innings and struck out 11. Haley Butterfield went five innings, allowed six hits and struck out five.

“We are just getting into the flow of things right now and those two gals have done a great pitching so far this year,” Bill Butterfield said. “They are starting to show their rhythm. Any sort of jam either their teammates are helping them get out of it or they are getting out of it themselves. It’s fun to watch.”

In the opening game, the Midgets scored six runs in the first inning and didn’t slow down. Dickinson tacked on four runs in the next two innings.

Cooper went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI, while Avery Privratsky and Mackee Hoffmann each had two hits and a RBI. Privratsky’s two hits were a pair of doubles and scored the final run in the contest. The senior right fielder also drove in the final run in the second game as she walked with the bases loaded.

Marissa Drenth went 2 for 3 for the Blue Jays, while Jaydee Lange, Paige Peterson, Alicia Beckman and Kadie Anderson each had a hit.

However, the biggest deterrent for the Blue Jays’ in both games was committing errors. Jamestown had four errors including three in the opener.

“We need to be making plays on defense,” Jamestown head coach Mike Soulis said. “We need to be making the outs we should. The girls know and I don’t have to tell them. We didn’t play well. We are a lot better team than we showed tonight.”

During the second game, Jahner helped record the first three outs — two strikeouts and a groundout. From there, the Blue Jays couldn’t touch her. Jahner struck out the side twice.

Rachel Jahner, the Midgets’ senior shortstop, led the offense going 1 for 1 with two RBI, three walks and three stolen bases. Cooper tacked on two more hits, while Riley Cooper posted a hit and two RBI. Mackee Hoffmann was held hitless for the first time this season, but she did drive in two runs.

The Midgets continued their season traveling to Turtle Mountain for a West Region doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. today.

“We are going up to Belcourt (today) and it is a long trip,” Bill Butterfield said. “Then next week we go to Bismarck (High) and (Bismarck) Century is here on Thursday. There’s no rest for the weary. We are right in the middle of it. We are trying to get into the rhythm of a game every other day and a practice here and there.”
