The Dickinson High softball team’s 15-game win streak came to a halt.

Minot Ryan junior Hannah Stewart and senior Brieann Backes didn’t allow the Midgets many chances.

Stewart and Backes combined for 14 innings, allowed one run on 10 hits and struck out 20 as the Lions swept the Midgets 8-1 and 4-0 in a West Region doubleheader on Monday at Gress Softball Complex.

“Overall, we played fairly decent,” Dickinson head coach Bill Butterfield said. “All the credit goes to Minot Ryan. They hit the ball well and our pitchers learned a lot of things about pitching against good hitters.”

Dickinson (15-2, 10-2 West Region) had plenty of chances to tack on runs, but Stewart buckled down to throw multiple strikeouts. The Lions’ junior finished with seven innings, allowed one run on six hits and struck out 11.

In the sixth inning with the score sitting 4-1 in favor of the Lions, Dickinson had runners on second and third after Madison Jahner ripped a double to right field. Hannah Stewart collected back-to-back strikeouts of Lexi Yates and Riana Cooper to end the threat.

“I feel like our pitchers are settling in and they are getting comfortable,” Minot Ryan head coach Julie Stewart said. “They just continue to get better and improve every game. We were able to come out of some jams and it just shows a lot about our kids. We didn’t get overly excited and stayed mentally tough.”

Hannah Stewart also went 2 for 4 with two RBI, while Sydney Marmon finished 3 for 4 with a RBI and scored two runs. Sheyenne Schmidt and Maddie Lipp added three hits. Lipp also supplied Minot Ryan’s lone extra base hit with a double.

The opener was tied twice 0-0 and 1-1. Avery Privratsky led off the fourth inning with a double and came around to score on a passed ball.

However, Minot Ryan scored at least one run in the next three innings, which included four in the seventh. Dickinson senior Haley Butterfield was tagged with loss after going seven innings, allowed eight runs (four earned) and struck out four.

During the second game, Backes was equally sharp. The senior went seven scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out nine.

Backes and Dickinson sophomore Madison Jahner were locked in a pitching duel until the fourth inning when Minot Ryan scored all four of its runs. The Lions’ senior pitcher supplied a two-RBI single in the inning.

“Overall, I wasn’t disappointed in our performance,” Bill Butterfield said. “We had some opportunities. We couldn’t really get some hits put together in a row. We would get some gals on base, but we just couldn’t come through. You got to credit them for good pitching and getting themselves out of jams.”

The Midgets’ hits came from Rachel Jahner, Mackee Hoffmann, Lexi Yates and Riana Cooper. Madison pitched seven innings, allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out eight.

Dickinson has a quick turnaround as the team travels to Jamestown for a West Region doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. today. The Midgets play five games in the next three days.

“We have a lot of games this week,” Rachel Jahner said. “We just have to be mentally prepared for each game and not take any game too lightly. We just need to go in and take care of business.”
