Dickinson drops 2 matches at state

BISMARCK — The Dickinson High girls tennis team was saddled with back-to-back losses during the first day of the state tournament.

Grand Forks Red River, the 12-time defending state champions, defeated the Midgets 4-1, but the Dickinson responded in the second game but couldn’t come away with a victory as Valley City won 3-2.

Dickinson’s lone win during the opening game against the Roughriders came from the doubles team of Mariah Jorda and McKenna Love defeating Ellen Larsen and Michaela Meland 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.

In the second match, Meryl Kovacs and Kayla Wallace grabbed wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Kovacs defeated Reagan Ingstad in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2, while Wallace topped Abby Ingstad 6-2 and 6-2.

The duo of Wallace and Ireland Jung opens the doubles portion of the state tournament against Maddie Anderson and Alexi Caoili of Red River at 1:30 p.m. today.
