Charchenko shoots 88 to lead Midgets in Minot

MINOT — For the second time in five days, Sydney Charchenko led the Dickinson High girls golf team.

However, this time Charchenko posted a career best.

The Dickinson freshman shot an 88, which was placed in a tie for sixth, during the Minot Invitational on Saturday at Souris Valley Golf Course.

“Her first hole was tough, but other than that she played really well,” Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said. “It’s really good to see that if they have a bad hole, they don’t let it bother them and they move on. That’s a huge part of the game.”

As a team, Dickinson finished in sixth place with a 386 and was four strokes off from fifth place Mandan (382).

The rest of the Midgets four scores came from senior Rachel Lantz (93), freshman Daisia Wallner (102) and eighth-grader Gabby Knopik (103).

“We have some younger girls that really have a lot of talent and a lot of potential,” Berglund said about Dickinson taking three of the four scores from freshmen or younger. “We are seeing that they are improving every tournament and getting better. They are learning from their mistakes and they are always thinking about their next shot.”

Jamestown’s Sierra Bennion won the invitational in a one-hole playoff against Katie Kasper of Bismarck High. Bennion and Kasper each shot a 70 during the first 18 holes.

The Blue Jays won the invitational with a 351, followed by runner-up Bismarck Century (356) and the Demons placed third (360).

Dickinson continues its season traveling to the Turtle Mountain Invitational at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

“This next week is going to be really good for us,” Berglund said. “We’ve got a lot of drills set aside and it’s a lot of short game. There are a lot of drills from 60 to 80 yards shots. Now that we have a couple of tournaments under our belts, we can learn from those tournaments and use those tournaments to help prepare for the next one.”
