Midgets top Williston, earn first win

WILLISTON — The Dickinson High football team scored in all three phases of the game on Friday, and it led to the Midgets’ first win of the season, 29-13 at Williston.

On offense, junior running back Martin Lopez scored a rushing touchdown in the second quarter, and in the third quarter, senior Antonio Nunez tossed a scoring pass to senior Conner Hoenke. On defense, sophomore Tristan Pelton returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter.

And after the Coyotes added a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, cutting Dickinson’s advantage to 22-13, Hoenke took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to complete the scoring.

“We picked up right where we left off last week, except this week we finished drives,” Midgets head coach John Tuchscherer said. “We controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Lopez opened the scoring with a touchdown in the second, but the kick after was blocked. Williston returned the next kickoff for a score and led 7-6. Freshman kicker Nagi Williams added a field goal before halftime to give Dickinson a 9-7 edge at the break.

“We finally came out after halftime and finished a game that we had a chance to win,” Tuchscherer said. “I’m proud of our guys. They earned this win.”

The touchdowns from Pelton and Hoenke in the third helped the Midgets pull away and secure the team’s first win after an 0-6 start. Dickinson is now 1-4 in the West Region. The Coyotes are now 1-6 overall and winless in the region.
