Heart River beats Watford City 28-6 in first round of playoffs

WATFORD CITY -- Seth Ewoniuk found the end zone four times and helped Heart River reach the quarterfinals of the Class 1A football playoffs.

Ewoniuk rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass on quarterback Tyson Kudrna's only attempt of the game to help the Cougars beat Watford City 28-6 on Saturday afternoon at Fred Fridley Field.

The No. 3-ranked Cougars (8-1) will travel to face Region 4 rival Hazen (7-2) next Saturday in the quarterfinals. No. 4-ranked Hazen is the region's top seed in the playoffs and Heart River is the No. 3 seed.

Cougars senior running back Cole Hecker didn't find the end zone, but he bettered Ewoniuk by a single yard on the ground. Hecker helped his backfield buddy produce a truly balanced rushing attack with 26 carries for 165 yards.

Ewoniuk had a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter to help Heart River take a 7-0 halftime lead.

He broke free for a 56-yard scamper in the third quarter and tacked on a 5-yard TD run late in the fourth.

Keegan Thompson found Logan Fettig from four yards out for Watford City's only touchdown.

Josh Rolfsrud had 76 yards rushing on 22 carries for the Wolves, the No. 2 seed out of Region 3 whose season ended with a 5-4 record.
