Bismarck boys holds off Midgets' late comeback

BISMARCK -- A late second-half comeback fell just short for the Dickinson High boys basketball team on Thursday night.

Trailing Bismarck High by as much as 18 points with less than 8 minutes remaining, the Midgets turned to a full-court press and began chipping away at the lead. They got it within two points but it was too late.

Taylor Schafer scored a game-high 28 points on 10 of 15 shooting to help the Demons hang on for a 79-74 West Region victory.

"Right now, everything we have to overcome is mental," Dickinson head coach John Wilson said. "Our kids, we have to get punched in the mouth and we have to have something happen."

Jordan Krieg had 21 points and six rebounds for the Midgets (7-8, 4-8 West). Mark Erickson hit four 3-pointers and added 16 points. Jaden Kudrna scored 10.

Though Dickinson shot 19 of 29 (66 percent) from the field in the second half, it was forced to foul down the stretch to try and continue making a run at the lead.

But the Demons were too tough at the free-throw line. They were 14 of 17 from the line and hit several in the final minutes.

"They hit their free throws at the end," Wilson said. "We had a chance."

Troy Hausauer scored 18 points and Tyler Unruh added 10 for the Demons (9-6, 8-4 West).

The Midgets host Jamestown at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, one of their four remaining regular-season games.

Wilson said he wants to see Dickinson play the rest of the season the way it did the final 8 minutes Thursday night.

"We have to play every game with that kind of confidence and energy," he said.
