Miners bury Carrington, place 3rd
MANDAN -- The Beulah Miners lost 3-1 in the semifinals of the Class B state baseball tournament against Grafton early Saturday at Mandan's Memorial Ballpark.
Beulah's loss ended its bid to repeat as state champions.
However, the Miners rebounded in the afternoon with a 3-1 win over Carrington in the third place game.
Beulah senior Trevor Zacher struck out eight from the mound for the Miners (19-2) in the first game. But Grafton senior pitcher Jaime Villarreal led the Spoilers to a win while limiting Beulah's offense to only one run. Villarreal also had two RBIs on offense.
The Spoilers got an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but neither team scored for the next four innings. It looked like the Spoilers would keep the shutout, until the top of the seventh when Zacher scored fellow senior Cody Nelson to tie the game 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Grafton responded and put away Beulah with a game-winning two-run hit to eliminate the Miners from title contention.
Against Carrington, Beulah went up against a solid Cardinals team that took an early 1-0 lead.
Carrington sophomore Brady Smith's hit scored senior Taylor Skytland to get a 1-0 lead in the first inning. But Nelson took the mound for the Miners, and limited the Cardinals to only that score to help his team get the win and a third place state finish.
The Miners unleashed their offense in the third inning and scored all of their three runs. Mellmer, Koch and Scherer each scored for Beulah in the inning to get the 3-1 lead.
That would be enough to get the third place prize in the state tournament.
