Haseleu leads Class B over Class A

FARGO -- Class B's drought in the Lions boys basketball series wasn't a long one, but it is over.

The Class B all-stars defeated Class A 84-80 during the 37th annual series Tuesday at the Fargo Civic Center.

"It was a fun game to play in and it was fun playing with all these guys," said Maple Valley-Enderlin's Jordan Haseleu. "I'm sure (Class A) wanted to win just as badly as we did, but we were able to get it done in the end."

Haseleu finished with 16 points and connected for two three pointers to help Class B seal its first win in the series since 2010. Class B swept Class A that year.

"Our guys believed they could win," said Class B coach Ben Nelson of Milnor. "They had the talent and were able to match up well with the talent on the Class A team. We preached hustle and hard work and we knew if we did those things we would be right there. A lot of the guys stepped up to get it done."

Dickinson Trinity standout Jacob Volk, who will play at Dickinson State in the fall, paced Class B with 17 points and six rebounds.

"We played aggressive the whole night and I think that is a big reason why we won the game," said Volk, who also connected for two three pointers including one with 2 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in regulation that staked Class B to a 78-73 lead.

The game was tied 40-40 at halftime and there were a total of 12 ties throughout the game.

The second game of the series is set for 7 p.m. today at the Bismarck Civic Center.

Fargo Shanley standout A.J. Jacobson paced Class A with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Nate Mertens of Devils Lake added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Class A trailed 83-80 with the ball in the final ten seconds of regulation, but Grand Forks Red River guard Mac Kroeplin's 3-pointer attempt didn't fall.

Volk grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He sunk the back end of two free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Trevor Zacher of Beulah connected for two three pointers and finished with 10 points for Class B.
