RICHARDTON -- Before the opening kickoff, Richardton-Taylor-Hebron sophomore running back Denver Colgrove was nervous.

In less than 10 seconds, those nerves flew out the window as Colgrove recovered Mott-Regent's opening kickoff fumble.

The opening fumbled kickoff led to RTH's first touchdown, but the Raiders were far from finished in their first 9-man football game in two years defeating the Wildfire 42-12 on Tuesday.

"I had those first-game jitters really bad and starting out with that fumble got all the jitters out of me," Colgrove said. "It felt really good."

For the last two seasons, RTH played 11-man football, but returned back to 9-man this year. The Raiders' head coach Travis Olson was pleased with his team's performance.

"I thought the kids came out and played hard," Olson said. "There's a 100 mistakes out there. They know that and we know that, but the thing is that they played hard, especially early in the season."

The Raiders didn't miss a beat from the opening kickoff to scoring a combined 36 points in the first two quarters. RTH's offensive charge was led by the two running back tandem of Colgrove and junior Jaden Schmidt. Lane Aune, a senior fullback, also saw a number of carries resulting in positive yards.

"We had three or four good running backs getting some yards," said RTH senior quarter Lane Voltz, who has three carries for 12 yards and two touchdowns. "It was big that everyone was able to get involved."

Schmidt had 15 carries for 163 yards including the team's opening score at the 10-minute, 25-second mark. Colgrove supplied 90 yards, eight carries and his first two varsity touchdowns of his high school career.

"It was fantastic," Colgrove said about scoring his first varsity touchdown. "It was the best feeling ever."

Despite taking a 30-point loss, Mott-Regent head coach Ron Benson said this was a positive learning experience.

"It's a pretty young team and we needed this first game," Benson said. "We needed to find out where we are at. We'll take some good things out of this. This is the only way you can teach it. Everything looks good in practice. I'm not happy to lose, but the effort was there. We'll get much better as we go along."

Tyler Zentner, who tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Brady Wegh in the second quarter, has the most experience returning for the Wildfire. Zentner had 47 yards on 13 carries on the ground and went 5 of 10 with 91 yards through the air. Brett Messmer had 21 yards on seven carries including a five-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The biggest change Voltz said about moving from 11-man to 9-man was the pressure taken off the passing game. Voltz threw for 4 of 7 for 38 yards.

Though the Raiders are relishing their first win of the season, Colgrove and Olson know it's just the start of the season. RTH travels to Shiloh Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday.

"We don't want this win to get to our heads and get over confident," Colgrove said. "We want to make sure we are ready for Shiloh this Saturday. It's a big game and we don't want to take a day off."

Olson added: "They have to know we have a lot of work to do, because we have a big game on Saturday."
