The Dickinson High wrestling team celebrated Christmas early and opened a present which had been sitting under its tree for the last 10 years.

0 Talk about it

The present was winning the Dickinson Classic for the first time since 2003.

“It’s definitely an early Christmas present, I’d rather have this than a lot of other things,” Dickinson head coach Adam Orton said with a smile. “I’m definitely happy with the way they performed today.”

Dickinson had five finalists, claimed two individual titles at 113 and 120 pounds and finished with a total of 10 placers en route to scoring 222 points on the second day of the Dickinson Classic on Saturday at DHS gymnasium.

“We all wrestled really hard this weekend and it showed,” said Dickinson senior Devin Berger, who finished runner-up at 132 pounds. “It’s been awhile since we’ve taken first in this tournament.”

The Midgets’ two individual championships were junior Austin Hutzenbiler (113) and sophomore Jaret Lee (120). Both Hutzenbiler and Lee collected pins in their respected final match.

Hutzenbiler, who is ranked No. 2 in the state at 113 pounds, defeated Dirk Wolf of Lemmon (S.D.) in 5 minutes, 56 seconds. Lee had to wrestle his teammate Caden Haugen, who was wrestling unattached and finished in third, in the semifinals to reach the championship match. The sophomore pinned Haugen in 5:14 and followed up with a quick pin over Watford City’s Jade Hepper in the finals at 1:14.

“It didn’t really feel like a match in a tournament,” said Lee, who is ranked No. 2 in the state at 120 pounds, about his semifinal match against Haugen. “It just felt like another day in practice.”

Berger said he was glad to see many of his teammates in the finals. The Midgets also had Michael Cherwinski (145) and Clayton Tangen (152) each finish runner-up in their respected weight classes.

“That’s the fun thing when you have a lot of your teammates in the finals,” Berger said with a smile. “It’s good see a lot of people there, because we are all working really hard in the room and it shows.”

The other placers for Dickinson included Haugen and Sterling Quintanilla (195) taking third, Justin Meyer (182), Chris Sickler (220) and Dual Keck (heavyweight) each ended in fourth, while Raphael Lopez (160) placed sixth and Thomas Irwin (138) rounded out in seventh.

Dickinson will use this lift of confidence going into the second half of the season. The Midgets have West Region duals against the top three teams after the holiday break. Orton said the team is savoring the win, but he knows after the break it’s going to be hectic.

“We have some time off, but it can’t be a big break,” he said. “We can enjoy the break and enjoy Christmas, but crunch time is coming up. We are going to have to stay focused, because we are just starting.”

Killdeer, which entered the second day with three semifinalists, only had one — senior David Dukart — advance to the championship match.

In the championship match, Fargo South’s Jake Solem defeated Dukart in a 3-2 decision. The match was tied 1-1 going into the final minute. Dukart tried for a takedown, but Solem countered the attempt and scored the match-winning points on a takedown of his own.

“We were both kind of slower, more defensive wrestlers,” said Dukart, who finished seventh at the state tournament as a junior at 195 pounds. “It came down to that last shot that I took that I missed and he got.”

Dukart is the only senior on Killdeer’s roster. He admitted there are tough times, but he wants to set a good example for the younger wrestlers.

“It’s kind of a lot of pressure on me to be strong, aggressive in the wrestling room and in tournaments, so it’s kind of tough sometimes when there are tough practices, because I want to keep my head up and everyone else’s heads up,” he said. “I’m honored to be a role model. I’ll do it, but it gets hard sometimes.”

The Cowboys finished with all six varsity wrestlers finishing in the top six. Dukart was runner-up, while Derek Tabor (145) placed third, Tanner Rohde (132) and David Arthur (138) took fifth, while Dillan Jepson (160) and Cole Dukart (126) were sixth. As a team, Killdeer finished in 10th place with 101.5 points.

Jepson, who was the No. 1 seed at 160 pounds, dislocated his shoulder during warm ups on Saturday forcing him to withdraw from his semifinal match.

“The day started out a little bad, because Dillan dislocated his shoulder during warm ups, so he had to default out, and Derek had a tough match in the semifinals that we thought we could win,” Killdeer head coach Shane Olson said. “But, we came back a wrestled well.

“We are still building and this was a good learning experience for the guys.”
