Heart River’s Mattson wins medalist at Region 5 Tournament

BOWMAN — After winning on Tuesday, Heart River’s Jada Mattson didn’t stop there.

The junior shot a 77 to win medalist during the Region 5 Tournament on Friday at Sweetwater Golf Course.

Heart River also qualified for the state tournament as a team after finishing third with a 384. Hazen won the team title with a 354 and Beulah came in runner-up (371). Hazen’s head coach Kathy Berglund was named Region 5 coach of the year.

The top 10 golfers qualified for the state tournament. The rest of the top 10 included Hazen’s Baylee Fitzgerald in runner-up (81) and Kayla Lindquist taking third (85). Beulah’s Jenny Zastawniak, who was named senior athlete of the year, placed fourth (87).

Hazen’s Nikole Bitterman finished fifth (89), Hannah Obrigewitch of Beulah was sixth (90). Killdeer’s Aimee Kittilson placed seventh (95).

Morgan Tomchuk of Beulah was eighth (95), while Bowman County’s Mataya Seamands placed ninth (98). Kaydin Schmitt and Megan Neameyer of Hazen and Beulah’s Nessa Iverson finished in a tie for 10th (99).

The state-qualified golfers from Region 5 complete their season at the Class B state golf tournament, which begins May 27 in Carrington.
