Golfers finish Day 1 of Class A tourney

Jamestown’s inability to finish hurt again on Tuesday.

Still, the Blue Jays came away from the first day of the Class A state golf meet in fourth place with a 314, also finishing as the top team from the west.

“I guess you could say we’re in the mix a little bit,” Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said. “We kind of played our way out of it near the end of the round. That was a little disappointing, I guess.”

Fargo Shanley shot a blistering 300, thanks to four scorers who came in under 78. Davies is in second with 305, led by a 72 from Tanner Kretchman, who is tied for the lead. Riley Johnson also carded a 72 for West Fargo, which sits third with a 312.

Jamestown is within striking distance, but multiple golfers ended up taking bogey and double bogeys on the back nine that bloated the Blue Jays’ score.

“That’s one thing that hurt us throughout the year — we need to finish strong,” Kraft said. “We gave up a little too much at the end.”

Senior Brandon Stahlhut shot a 76 and is tied for eighth place. He lost three strokes on two holes on the back nine, but otherwise played a superb round. Austin Rene shot a 77 and is tied for 11th, while Jakobi Lux (80) and Nick Blaskowski (81) also had their scores used, despite double-bogeying their final holes.

Nick Stockert shot an 85 and Brady Hoggarth came in with an 86, except weird circumstances prevented Stockert from officially finishing his round.

As part of the game’s storied and stringent rules, a player’s card must be signed by him and also his playing partner, as they keep each other’s scorecard during the round. Once a card is handed in, it can’t be handed back out. Stockert handed in his card without the signature of his playing partner, disqualifying his round.

“It’s Nick’s job to make sure it’s signed,” Kraft said. “He gets to play (today) and it didn’t cost us a stroke, as he shot an 85. It was an honest mistake. … He might come back and shoot a really good round.”

Kraft said he figures the Blue Jays need three players to shoot at least a 75 to have a chance at catching Shanley or Davies.

“We need it to even have a prayer,” Kraft said. “Shanley has to shoot a 320. They need to come back to the field.”
