Dickinson State athlete of the week - Mackenzie Grubbs
Mackenzie Grubbs, a freshman on the Dickinson State track and field team, nearly had two top-10 finishes at a track meet at the University of South Dakota on Wednesday, April 11.
She finished eighth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.25 seconds, and earned 11th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.42.
DP: Where are you from and why did you choose DSU?
MG: "I'm from Upton, Wyoming and I chose DSU because Coach Walker is an awesome hurdle coach and I was super excited to work with him."
DP: How long have you been doing track and field for?
MG: "I've been doing track and field since sixth grade, so quite a while."
DP: Is hurdles the only event that you do or do you do other events?
MG: "I'm on the 4x100 and 4x400 and I sometimes get thrown in to sprints."
DP: What do you enjoy most about track?
MG: "I enjoy how fun it is, like the team part of it. It's fun to work with everyone and be mentally tough with everyone."
DP: Do you have any team goals you want to achieve this year?
MG: "We're actually going for the conference title again this year so it's pretty intense."
DP: Any individual goals?
MG: "Right now, individually, my goal is to qualify for nationals in the 400 (meter) hurdles."
DP: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would you choose?
MG: "I'd probably choose tacos."
DP: What's the last show you binged on Netflix?
DP: Who is your celebrity crush?
MG: "I'm gonna have to go with Zac Efron."
DP: Who has been your biggest inspiration to succeed?
MG: "My biggest inspiration to succeed has probably been, I guess I do a lot of it for my grandpa. It's so fun to watch him come to my meets and he's so encouraging and it's just a great conversation maker for us."
