Richardton-Taylor senior Nathan Schwartz was anxious to see if he reached his season's goal.

Pacing on the football field inside of the Biesiot Activities Center, Schwartz spent more than 20 minutes waiting for the times from the 200-meter dash to be announced. Previously qualifying for the 400, he won the 200 event, but he just didn't know whether or not his performance was good enough for a state-qualifying mark.

When his moment of truth finally arrived, Schwartz initially believed he fell short of the mark as Dickinson Trinity athletic director Gregg Grinsteinner announced the names first prior to the times over the public address system. That brief second of disappointment was quickly replaced with sheer joy as Grinsteinner uttered "with a state-qualifying time of 23.19 seconds."

With his hands on his head in disbelief, Schwartz was swarmed by his teammates and Raiders head coach Shawn Alder.

"I thought [Grinsteinner] was going to say, if I had qualified, the time before he said my name," Schwartz said. "At first I was disappointed and then all of a sudden he said "with a state-qualifying time" and I couldn't believe it."

Schwartz credited Watford City senior Carter Zenz, who finished close behind in second, for his state-qualifying result.

"It helped a lot to have Carter pushing me," Schwartz said. "It's just a lot easier to run a race with good competition. Without that, I don't think I could have finished as strong."

Many athletes took advantage of one of their final opportunities to qualify for state at the Dickinson Trinity Last Chance Meet on Tuesday, May 5.

The Titans had a number of kids make the state-qualifying cut, including the 4x400 relay team of Brinklyn Schumacher, Josie Glaser, Sarah Mayer and Kylen Kubas with a time of 4:10.97. Killdeer's foursome of Sydney Anderson, Chelsea Morlock, Rachel Voigt and Shawnee Hansen won the event with a time of 4:09.62.

In the girls' long jump, Titans junior Farrah Zeller took sixth place in the event with a state-qualifying mark of 16-05.

"My stomach kind of dropped when it happened," Zeller said. "I've been like two inches off for the last two years so it's such a relief that all the hard work has finally paid off."

Two other Titan juniors set school records.

Kaden Kuntz is Trinity's new record holder in long jump with a distance of 22-70.50 and Aric Knopik completed the same in the high jump, earning a state-qualifying height of 6-04.50.

Winning the girls long jump earlier in the day, Dickinson High junior Gabby Jung also won the long jump with a state-qualifying distance of 5-03.

On the DHS boys side, the team of Conner Hoenke, Mustafa Taylor, Issac Frimpong and Nathaniel Frimpong were victorious in the 4x100 relay, taking the event in a state-qualifying time of 44.73.

Hoenke, Taylor, Nathaniel Frimpong and Anton Heyes also earned a state-qualifying spot in the 4x200.

"It was more about our mood and our determination coming into today," Hoenke said. "We didn't want to qualify by place in the meet on Friday so we knew coming into today that we had to get in by time and it kind of motivated all of us to run a little bit faster."

The last opportunity that the athletes will have to qualify for state is in their respective regional meet. Dickinson High will travel to Bismarck for the WDA regional on Friday, May 18. Schools out of the Class B Southwest Region will return to Dickinson on Saturday, May 19.
