DSU wrestling collects two losses in dual doubleheader

Dickinson State sophomore Gresh Jones earned a technical fall against Montana State University Northern's Landon Bailey in the 133-pound weight class on Friday, Jan. 12 at Scott Gymnasium.

A strong start in each dual wasn't enough to propel the Dickinson State wrestling team to a win in either. The Blue Hawks fell to Montana State Northern 30-14 followed by a 28-8 defeat by Minot State in their doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 12 at Scott Gymnasium.

Dickinson State started the first dual off strong with freshman Mat Hruby defeating Northern Lights freshman Nick Kunz 10-9 in a back and forth match in the 125-pound weight class.

Blue Hawk sophomore Gresh Jones followed in the 133-pound match with an 18-2 technical fall over Northern Lights freshman Landon Bailey.

The good fortune ended there though. Taner Stone collected points in an open weight class, but Montana State won the rest of the matches.

"I think we had some really good starts to the duals," Dickinson State head coach Justin Schlect said. "In those matches they were being offensive and trying to score points and pushing the pace and proved that it works. We just need to continue to do those things over the pace of the dual."

A similar trend occurred in the following dual against the Beavers. Blue Hawk freshman Glen Anderson didn't collect a win in the 125-pound weight class, but Jones repeated his earlier success, downing freshman Marco Antonio Ramirezlazos 15-0 in the early moments of the second round.

"Starting at a lower weight, I told our 125s that we got to set the pace for the team," Jones said. "Show the other team that we're here to not mess around and we're here to get after it. Hopefully they see me and the 25s doing work and they start picking up the pace from there and everybody else wants to get the (technical fall) and the pin."

Unfortunately for the Blue Hawks, that didn't happen.

Many matches were close though, lost by two or three points. Some winning points were given away at the final second, but most of the time, Dickinson State wrestlers sat in a near stalemate, not taking the first move to earn points when they needed them.

"We definitely need to work on trusting our offense and pulling the trigger on some things," Schlect said. "It's a fact of if you're trying to score points you might miss some opportunities pulling the trigger and that would help a lot overall."

That lack of confidence could be because of the youth of the wrestling team. With only two upperclassmen, and one tournament under their belt, the Blue Hawks don't have a lot of college wrestling experience.

"I think it was just first tournament, first home dual jitters," Jones said. "Everybody wrestled almost compact, they didn't open up really. We have a lot of freshmen too so they were kind of, after the match I talked to them a bit, they were almost shell-shocked."

Minot State on the other hand, had many seniors who showed their skills, including 165-pound Carlos Toledano, who defeated Dickinson State freshman Logan Wagoner 5-3, and 197-pound Briley Crissler who faced DSU sophomore Payson Dirk and won 8-3.

"(That) was a match we had lost last year by a pretty good margin," Minot State head coach Evan Forde said. "Briley Crissler is a senior of ours. He came back to win that match this year so I was really impressed with him."

The Blue Hawks won't have long to think about their mistakes and recover as they get back on the mat at home tomorrow for the Tyler Plummer Tournament at 9 a.m.

"This is kind of the grind of our season a bit," Schlect said. "That's the trick of wrestling is that you have to turn around and make those adjustments not just week-to-week but sometimes day to day and sometimes within hours to the next match."
