Activist Winona LaDuke talks Monday about her plan to raise awareness of the Sandpiper oil pipeline which is scheduled to traverse an area from Park Rapids, Minn., to Backus, Minn., on it’s way from western North Dakota to Superior, Wis. LaDuke and fellow riders rode their horses to Park Rapids Monday, trying to follow as close as possible the pipeline route.

Horseback riding was an important part of childhood for sisters Ann Geiszler, Polly Lindemann, Mary Bartholomay and Beth Lange, shown in these undated photos. The sisters haven’t ridden together in more than 40 years, but riding was an important part of their childhood. They took a photo similar to one they had taken more than 40 years ago to commemorate the occasion.
