FARGO -- When Sophie Hackman, a 13-year-old from Velva, N.D., saw a young girl at the bottom of the deep end of the pool at the Holiday Inn in Fargo, she knew something was wrong. “It didn’t look right. She looked way too young to be in that part of the pool,” Hackman said. Hackman said the little girl appeared to be trying to use her toes to bounce off the bottom of the pool but couldn’t reach the surface.
FARGO – A man initially charged with attempted murder in connection with an armed standoff at a West Fargo motel in March 2016, pleaded guilty to lesser charges in Cass County District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and was sentenced to five years in prison. Jan-Michel Wangstad, 38, pleaded guilty to charges of terrorizing, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance in connection with an incident that happened March 18, 2016, at the Rodeway Inn.
FARGO – The fourth and last man to be sentenced in the beating death of Joey Gaarsland outside of a Fargo bar in May 2015 was sentenced to 20 years in prison during a hearing Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Cass County District Court.
FARGO -- A Cass County judge has declined to throw out the lifetime prison sentence Barry Garcia received two decades ago for murdering a West Fargo woman when he was 16 years old. Barry Garcia shot and killed Cherryl Tendeland in November 1995 as she sat in a parked car.

FARGO--The news that Blue Angels pilot Jeff Kuss died Thursday, June 2, during a practice flight in Smyrna, Tenn., hit Dick Walstad hard. Walstad, a longtime organizer of AirSho events in Fargo, befriended the U.S. Marine Corps captain during planning for the AirSho here last summer and the two men remained close after the Blue Angels moved on.

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A man who described himself to police as a Second Amendment activist was arrested after allegedly discharging a handgun in a Moorhead hotel room. According to documents filed in Clay County District Court: Police were called Thursday, April 21, to the Super 8 Motel at 3621 8th St. S., on a report of an intoxicated male with a gun.

Instead, he underwent surgery and for months afterward he had to use a colostomy bag and a catheter. He's heading to prison on a four-year term. But on Monday morning, Karmen Redshirt stood before a judge and said the ordeal had changed him, for the better.
