BISMARCK—North Dakota Democrats urged Secretary of State Al Jaeger to not share voter information with a controversial commission studying voter fraud. In an open letter Monday, Aug. 7, to Jaeger, a Republican, Democratic leaders said providing the information "raises serious concerns regarding potential violations of North Dakotans' privacy and right to participate in elections free from interference." The letter was signed by Democratic-NPL Party Chairwoman Kylie Oversen along with the minority leaders in the House and Senate, Rep. Corey Mock and Sen. Joan Heckaman.
JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger has released the names of the people who were found dead in a Jamestown home on Sunday, Aug. 6. Edinger says the man is 33-year-old Casey Gene Jensen and the woman is 26-year-old Cherish Renae Petersen. Edinger also confirmed a weapon was taken from the home in the course of their investigation.
HILLSBORO, N.D.—Authorities have identified a Grand Forks man killed in a rollover crash early Sunday, Aug. 6, north of Hillsboro. Harold Weivoda, 73, died after the pickup he was riding in entered the median on Interstate 29 and rolled 10 miles north of Hillsboro, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at 1 a.m. Sunday, where they found a 1995 Ford pickup with a trailer had rolled into the median, according to a news release from the Highway Patrol.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen, injured in Thursday night’s victory against Atlanta, underwent successful surgery on her left hand Friday, Aug. 4, and will be sidelined indefinitely, the team said in a news release. Whalen’s surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester was to repair a fracture of her fifth metacarpal in her left hand. The 14-year veteran has started all 22 games for the Lynx this season, averaging 8 points, 2.5 rebounds and a team-high 4.1 assists per game. The Lynx are scheduled to play at Indiana on Sunday.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. -- Two sitting North Dakota sheriffs are among the applicants to take over as chief of police in Devils Lake after a spring scandal led to the ouster of department leaders. Four applicants are seeking the job, according to City Administrator Terry Johnston: Benson County Sheriff Steve Rohrer, Kidder County Sheriff Barry Vannatta, Bismarck Police Sgt. Lyle Sinclair and recently retired Highway Patrol Sgt. Joseph Knowski.

GRAND FORKS — Bond has been set at $35,000 for Jody Christopher Bergland Jr., who is accused of shooting and wounding a man Monday at a Grand Forks convenience store. Bergland, 24, is charged with attempted murder, a Class A felony, and reckless endangerment, a Class C felony, after police say he shot Glenn Robert Hansen at the Valley Dairy at 2401 S. Columbia Road.
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Monday, July 31, he intends to nominate Minot, N.D., native Daniel Gade to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Gade will be nominated for the remainder of a five-year term that expires in 2021. Gade graduated from Minot High School in 1993 and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1997. He was wounded in action twice and decorated for valor while serving in Iraq and lost his right leg to an improvised explosive device, according to a news release from Gov. Doug Burgum's office.
FARGO -- A contract worker painting markings on the runway of Hector International Airport was killed in a collision with an SUV early Monday, July 31, 2017, said Shawn Dobberstein, executive director of the Fargo Airport Authority. The worker was identified by Fargo Police as Darry Arveson Jr., 48, Glen Ullin, N.D.
PLATTE, S.D. — A Plankinton man is facing grand theft charges after allegedly stealing a motorcycle and posting about it on Facebook. James Tipton, 31, was recently charged with grand theft for taking a 2013 Victory motorcycle from Todd Van Zee, owner of TNT Auto Plex in Platte, according to court documents.
