BISMARCK — An estimated 26,775 gallons of produced water spilled Monday, July 19, on private property south of Watford City, N.D., according to a news release from the state Department of Environmental Quality.
Produced water, or brine, is a mixture of saltwater, oil and sometimes drilling fluids that is created as a by-product during oil and gas production.
A break in a pipeline operated by Kansas-based Tallgrass Energy caused the spill. The department did not disclose how much of the brine has been cleaned up.
Department officials will continue inspecting the site and monitoring remediation efforts, according to the release.
