SHEYENNE, N.D. - A fire destroyed a grain elevator in Sheyenne in southeast North Dakota late Tuesday.
Officials say the fire call came in about 9 p.m. No injuries were reported.
"Seen a little bit of smoke coming out of it. And then the fire whistle went off shortly afterwards. Everybody should have been out of there," Fritz Wetzel with Equity Co-op Elevator said.
Wetzel says dust and stores of grain could have contributed to the fire's intensity. About 50 firefighters from Sheyenne, Carrington and New Rockford responded.
"Once the grain catches on fire, that can burn very hot, too. It's like a corn-fired furnace," Wetzel said.

With the remaining embers turning to ash, fire officials say it's too soon to determine a cause.
"The elevator manager told us that they were having problems today and they were working on some barings and some belts. No actual cause of why it started yet," Fire Chief Elvis Thumb said.
