WILLISTON -- Oil and gas companies that are leading the way in the Williston Basin will be recognized in December at the second-annual Williston Petroleum Banquet.

The Williston Basin chapter of the American Petroleum Institute is seeking nominations to highlight local achievements and community service by the oil and gas industry. The winners will be announced during the Dec. 5 event at The Well at Williston State College.

"This is the epicenter of the oil industry," said Ken Callahan, president of the Williston API chapter's board. "We need to celebrate and recognize what's going on."

Scott Tinker, state geologist of Texas, will be the keynote speaker. Tinker also is director of the bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin who spent 17 years in the industry prior to joining the university. Tinker has lectured in nearly 50 countries and recently co-produced the energy documentary "Switch."

The event attracted 400 people last year, and organizers expect it could hit 500 this year.

"This will be the premier event for years to come," Callahan said.

The achievement award categories are industry innovation, community service and outstanding achievement. Anyone may submit a nomination. The nominee does not need to be a member of API, but must be operating or contributing to the oil and gas industry in the Williston Basin.

The formal banquet is open to the public and costs $75 a ticket.
