BISMARCK - The North Dakota Public Service Commission has received more than $3 million in federal grants, and some will go toward a reclamation project in the southwest corner of the state.
The Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining awarded the commission $3.38 million to carry out three major reclamation projects at abandoned mines, according to a press release. The commission has planned a drilling and pressurized grouting project to stabilize underground mines near Scranton, Bowman and Reeder.
“The commission’s Abandoned Mine Lands Program is a valuable arrangement made possible by active mining operations,” Commissioner Randy Christmann said in a release. “It allows our experts at the commission to make these abandoned mine lands as safe as possible for future generations.”
A similar project is planned for an underground mine north of Beulah, according to the release. The commission also plans to reclaim a mine west of Hazen. Work is set to begin in June and last through the fall.
