PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State geologist Derric Iles says South Dakota is making great strides in putting drilling and geological information on the Internet as part of an effort to expand exploration for oil and gas.

Iles told a state environmental conference Wednesday that records have been put online to help oil and gas companies interested in exploring for oil and gas in South Dakota. The state is encouraging more exploration for oil and gas in an attempt to join the boom in North Dakota and other states.

Iles says people can use an interactive map to search a particular area and get information on specific wells drilled in the past.

According the website, information is available from nearly 100,000 holes drilled for oil and gas, water and other purposes.
