MITCHELL, S.D. — The director of the Corn Palace has resigned from his position with the city of Mitchell, Mayor Bob Everson announced Monday, July 29.

Scott Schmidt, a Mitchell native who took the job in February 2016, will stay in the position until Aug. 25, which is through the end of the annual Corn Palace Festival.

Prior to his position with the corn-decorated arena, Schmidt was the athletic director and men's basketball coach at Florida National University. He also previously worked as a recreation director and unit lead at a juvenile treatment facility in Plankinton before working for M33M youth basketball, Mitchell native Mike Miller’s youth basketball program.

Everson said in a statement that a search for a new Corn Palace director will begin soon.
