KENMARE, N.D. — Law enforcement officers in Kenmare, a town about 50 miles northwest of Minot, plan to hold a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 18, to honor a local police officer who was killed in the line of duty 100 years ago.

Police officer Julius Nielsen was shot and killed in downtown Kenmare on Sept. 18, 1921, while arresting a robbery suspect.

Five law enforcement officers were killed in Ward County between 1918 and 1921. Nielsen is the last Ward County officer to die in the line of duty.

The memorial service is 4 p.m. Saturday in Kenmare City Park. After the service, a procession will travel to Trinity Lutheran Church, where Nielsen is buried, in Kenmare. Officials plan to serve refreshments at the church.

The event is free and open to the public.
