Christmas is the time of giving and even though there are many organizations in need of necessities, it’s important to think of Dickinson's low-income elderly women as you open up your wallet and heart.

Women Empowering Women are hosting a holiday drive for low-income elderly women now until Dec. 18. Due to COVID-19, the organization is only accepting monetary donations or gift cards this year. Gift cards in need include Walmart gift cards, grocery gift cards, gas cards, public transportation tickets and pre-paid credit cards.

This is the second year Women Empowering Women have hosted a holiday drive and are looking forward to continuing spreading the word about this group of people.

“It’s very dear to our hearts because it’s something that we’ve seen as an under-served population, and so what we understand, this may be the only drive of its kind. So it’s unique and possibly the one of the only drives that benefits this population,” Jami Haynes, board member of Women Empowering Women, said.

Almost 100 women over the age of 75 years old in Dickinson are living in poverty and many of these women live on a total monthly income less than the average 30-year-old woman’s car expense, according to a Women Empowering Women press release.

“If you can give somebody the gift of necessity that they need, it’s going to make a huge impact on them. I don’t want to take away from anybody else because everybody has needs … but any donation that is made to this is well used… It’s going to something these women need to live and to maintain their quality of life,” Haynes added.

Tax deductible monetary donations and gift cards can be made directly to Women Empowering Women to benefit the low-income elderly women of the Dickinson area. Checks can be mailed to 5 Patterson Lake Drive, Dickinson. For more information, email or by Facebook message.
