While the sun may have been shining, things were a little windy for the third annual Recycle Yourself 5K.
This year, more than 150 people participated in the 5K, which recognizes the importance of organ donation.
In January 2013, the Theurer family suffered a tragic loss. Their son, brother, nephew and grandson, Kevin, passed away after a car accident. They made the choice of donating Kevin's organs. Through that decision, many lives were saved.
Wally Preissing, who received Kevin's lungs, was also able to participate again this year.
In September 2015, the Torstenson family also was impacted by organ donation when they found out there was a donor kidney for their family member, Tyler. The family had waited six years for the day to come.
The families put together a Recycle Yourself 5K to bring awareness to the community about how important being an organ donor is.
All of the money raised by the 5K will be given to LifeSource and to purchase gift cards to be given to transplant recipient families for expenses during their stays in the hospital.
Courtney Theurer, one of the event organizers, said she believes the event went well.
"I think we had a great turn out," Theurer said. "The wind was wild but we still had plenty of troopers! It's always fun getting the community together for a great cause. I love being able to raise awareness for organ donation!"
Tennille Torstenson, another event organizer, added, "We got to see new faces. The wind could have cooperated, but otherwise, it was nice."
Theuer said the event would not be possible without the Dickinson community.
"I want to thank our amazing community for their participation and support," she said. "We could not make this possible without you and our sponsors. I can't wait to see everyone next year to keep this great cause going!"
