A Dickinson man attempting to steal a laptop from Walmart was arrested early Thursday morning on multiple charges.

Clifton Hegstad, 54, had previously been removed from Walmart’s property but returned there Thursday by jumping over a fence on the northeast corner of the store.

Once inside, he asked an employee to see a laptop, and as the employee turned to close the case, Hegstad walked off, removing the laptop’s security device as he walked to the front of the store.

He walked past the merchandise door and past the last point of sale, but as he went to exit the same way he came in -- crawling over the fence -- he fell into the grass, where officers were able to handcuff him.

Hegstad was arrested for removal of a theft-prevention device, criminal trespassing and retail theft.
