Bad times don't last forever, even though they can seem to without the right support. Nodak insurance agent Dallas Nelson and his team aim to bring good — even in the bad times — and provide education and service all the time.

This year marks 30 years Nelson has been in the business, two years since opening his office downtown at 40 First Ave W., Suite 202.

For the first year and a half it was just him and his wife, Renee Nelson. Now the business is a team of five licensed professionals dedicated to providing excellent customer service and to be the best in the insurance realm in North Dakota.

“We strive to educate our clients to have a better understanding of what they have and why it is important to them. It is the most fantastic, rewarding opportunity to help and educate people,” Dallas Nelson said. “We went from ‘new kid on the block’ to ‘agent of the year.' We are No. 3 in the company. We missed being No. 2 by $500 bucks, so we have climbed the ranks and this year we've got a bull's-eye on No. 1.”

On their team is Dalton Nelson —Dallas Nelson’s son — and Gene Brown as licensed sales representatives and two licensed CSRs, Renee Nelson and Gabriella Beck.

“Most people I talk to that send me referral business are because we’re personable and we are teachers. We are not salespeople — we are customer service-driven educators,” Nelson said.

Nelson first received his license to insure back in 1991 and opened his office front with the help and support of his colleague, insurance agent Cliff Weiler.

“I would always insure with Cliff … I call Cliff Weiler the ‘Godfather of Nodak insurance,’ he is one of the oldest agents ever with Nodak. Been with them for 30-plus years.” Nelson said. “He was one of the first people that spoke of where I was going to end up professionally very early on in my career. “

Nodak insurance only insures North Dakota residents and those with North Dakota driver licenses. Nelson has received New Agent of the Year in 2020 from Nodak and credits the mix of his education style, being goal-driven and Nodak's unique policies for this success.

“I wake up in the morning and know what we need to do. We have sales meetings from 8 to 9 a.m. every day. Sometimes we don't talk about anything but the weather, but we all know what is going on in each other's day and we all know what it takes to be successful. There is accountability. If you talk to somebody and you can't close, somebody else will try and help you to get them to see the value in us,” Nelson said. “We have built in protections in our home policy that people wouldn't even think of … We have $10 grand for service line, $50 grand in equipment breakdown protection built in our protection because we want to provide better claim experience as well. We don't claim to be always the least expensive, but we do have the best coverage for the best premium dollar. And that is what we tell people. That our responsibility is to get you the best value for your premium dollar that what we do.”

Service line endorsement is an extra coat of insurance that extends beyond a basic homeowner policy, insuring the service lines to and from the property. The equipment breakdown endorsement provides coverage for appliances that includes but is not limited to the refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, TV screens tv, air conditioners and water heaters.

Nodak is celebrating 75 years of business this year.

Prior to his time with Nodak Insurance as an agent, Nelson worked in car insurance at where he was also part owner of, Dvorak Motors. He always has had the salesman inside him, considering his first sale was when he sold his brother's Matchbox toy car when they were kids. — something his brother never lets him forget. But his teaching side came from life and spiritual experiences.

Dallas Nelson is also the pastor of The Refuge church here in Dickinson. They have their service 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Sunday that includes praise and worship, Bible study and a social gathering.

"When something bad happens, we're up. If it's 2'clock in the morning and you get hit by somebody who shouldn't have left from the bar, we're comin'. I’ll get all the sleep I need when I am dead. I am going to be that guy, and Dalton is going to be that guy and Gene is going to be that guy. It is just who we are,” Nelson said. “I want to retire here. I like Dickinson; this is where I was born and raised. Both my grandfathers were business owners in this town, our roots are deep and I care about these people. “
