Eh, hello there fellow Northlanders. My name is Jason O’Day and I’m the new general news reporter for The Dickinson Press.

Dickinson seems like an awesome place to live. Everyone has been friendly, even the guy who backed into my car at Little Caesar’s.

Davenport, Iowa is my hometown, where I graduated from Assumption High School in 2011. After high school I logged a few semesters at community college and spent several years working a variety of jobs, mostly in warehouses and restaurants.

One pearl of wisdom I can offer you from my last restaurant serving gig at IHOP is to avoid the grilled tilapia. Everything else is decent, especially the breakfast burritos, but if you order the tilapia you’ll probably smell it before it comes out.

In 2016, with the support and encouragement of my wonderful family, I went back to college to pursue a writing career. In December of 2020, I graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science.

A few months after graduation, I landed a job in southwest Iowa as a staff reporter with the Creston News Advertiser. It was a valuable experience and I learned so much.

From a young age, I loved hunting and fishing, and my passion for the outdoors continues to this day. I will miss Iowa hunting deerly (pun intended), but I’m excited about what potential Badlands wildlife adventures are on my horizon.

I’ve become quite the at-home chef over the past few years, pretty close to perfection on salmon and baked carrots. I have strong feelings about pineapple on pizza because it’s delicious. Some of my favorite tv shows include “Friends,” “Hell on Wheels” and “Peaky Blinders.” I’m currently making my way through “Shameless,” the drama is riveting.

My younger sister Megan works in accounting and lives in the Des Moines area with her husband Keith.

My mom, Tammy, works in finance for the U.S. Department of Defense. She recently adopted a poodle from her local animal shelter. His name is Carter and he’s adorable.

I’ll be covering local government in many of the surrounding areas such as New England and Killdeer, as well as court proceedings among other topics. My background in politics and government should help with that coverage. I’m thrilled to learn more about this area and bring you the news.
