South Heart School District #9 South Heart School Board Regular Meeting, May 11, 2022 The regular meeting of the South Heart School Board was called to order by Pres. Kuylen in Classroom 401 at 7:00 PM. All members present as well as Supt. Dean, Prin. Jung, Prin. Geis and Business Mgr. Kristine Mehrer. Guests: Kristen Kuntz, Jana Schweigert, Jerica Smith. Jacobson moved, second by Meduna to approve agenda with additions. All in favor; motion carried. Prin. Jung recognized students for accomplishments noted at the Academic Awards program. Prin. Geis recognized the art class and teacher for building a 9-Square for the playground. Kudrna moved, second by Eberts to approve minutes from April 18 and 27, 2022. All in favor; motion carried. Jacobson moved, second by Eberts to approve May 2022 bills and payroll and April 2022 financial reports. All in favor; motion carried. Supt. Dean reviewed personnel report: hire Lola Hushka, part-time custodian ($19.60/hour), Resignation: Jamie Layman as paraprofessional effective May 20, 2022, Transfer requests approved for 22-23: Alyssa Radzak to Title I/Interventionist and Maleah Schmeling to Kindergarten, Job openings 22-23 school year: 3rd grade teacher, 4th grade teacher, elementary special education, activities director/PE Teacher, 2 paraprofessionals. Supt. Dean reviewed K-12 enrollment report = 371. Supt. Dean reviewed Activities Director report: 5 FBLA students traveling to Nationals in Chicago in June, FFA banquet was well organized and had a great turnout, 3 Speech competitors qualified for and one placed 5th at State Speech, Music students were successful at State, 5-12 spring concert “Heroes and Legends” on May 12, music student will be participating in Southwest Marching Band for Band Night parade May 13. Prin. Geis reviewed the strategy map for 22-23; School wide Title I report is due June 1; elementary field trips taking place in May. Prin. Jung reported 2 seniors representing South Heart for Best of the Class; 22-23 class schedule is set and registration is completed; graduation information mailed to parents; reviewed Grades 8 and 9 PreAct test data. Supt. Dean reported: power outage April 30 affected bells / intercom system, gym sound system, and video surveillance cameras. Claim with NDIRF has been submitted if needed, but deductible is $1500.00. Kudrna moved, second by Eberts to approve second reading of amended school board policies: GCC, HBAA, HCAA, HCC. Kudrna moved, second by Jacobson to accept resignations from Darcy Buerkle as Kindergarten teacher, Rachel Zarak as 4th Grade teacher, and Jessica Geis as elementary principal. Jacobson moved, second by Eberts to approve 2022-23 purchase of new math curriculum (6 year – 1 time purchase) Reveal K-4 curriculum $28,148.67 Big Ideas 5-8 curriculum $25,343.17. All in favor; motion carried. Kudrna moved, second by Meduna to approve tuition assistance for Lori Wagner for Business Education CTE certification classes. All in favor; motion carried. Eberts moved, second by Jacobson to approve FFA June 2022 summer pay for Calista Heley ($200.00) and Claire Alderman ($400.00). All in favor; motion carried. Meduna reported on SWCTE: Meat Lab is ready, dissection table has been purchased. Local business continue to sponsor and support the SWCTE financially. Meduna moved, second by Kudrna to approve 2nd reading of amended school board policies FDJ to ABAC, and FDK to ABAD. All in favor; motion carried. Kudrna moved, second by Eberts to approve 1st reading of amended school board policies BDD, DDA, DDBA, and DDAE. All in favor; motion carried. Meduna moved, second by Eberts to negotiate bus contracts for route #’s 2, 7, 8, 9, & 11, each for a 2 year term, directing Supt. Dean to make a good-faith effort to obtain two or more written quotations for each contract, to advertise for quotations and to publish a notice of the negotiations meeting which will be held Monday June 20th at 7:00 PM. All in favor; motion carried. Annual Heart River coop meeting was held May 9. Jacobson moved, second by Eberts to approve hiring Jace Kocer as 3rd Grade teacher. All in favor; motion carried. Eberts moved, second by Jacobson to approve hiring Jerome Hoffman for physical education teacher/activities director (203 day contract). All in favor; motion carried. Discussion was held regarding elementary principal opening. Kuylen will serve on hiring committee and Kuylen and Supt Dean will assemble interview team per board policy. Prin. Geis and Supt. Dean will review the elementary principal job description for accuracy. Application deadline May 25. Meduna moved, second by Jacobson to give permission to Kuylen to retain a lawyer.
