One weekend, three days, $1000 bingo prize and more fun than a barrel of monkeys — the 2020 Trinity Mardi Gras extravaganza launches soon.

Mardi Gras is a 56-year-old tradition that brought Western Edge rural communities together during the cold and recluse months of winter. Now, in recent years, its purpose extends to bring neighborly camaraderie to all cultures and subcommunities in Dickinson.

“In the past, churches would serve the function of these types of community traditions especially in small rural areas, “ John Diem, coordination of the Mardi Gras event, said.

“It's an old tradition that has been modernized for our growing city.”

This three-day event will have a wide range of family-fun activities that will start off in the afternoon on Friday, Jan. 24. There will also be a concert in the Trinity High School auditorium, featuring Kat Perkins and Dirty Words.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 25, there will be a free showing of the 2019 animated cartoon “The Addams Family” with popcorn and snacks available.

Throughout the different days, authentic homemade meals will be for sale; $14 for ages 12 and up; $7 for ages 5 -11 years old and free for 4 and under. The Friday meal (4:30 to 7:30 p.m.) will be Alaskan pollock fish; Saturday’s meal (3:30 to 8 p.m.) will include chicken noodle soup and fried chicken; Sunday’s serving (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will have deep fried turkey. There will also be a variety of food vendors to offer a more diverse selection of food.

“MIDWAY” games booths will be set up in the gymnasium for kids and game enthusiasts. Some of the games included will be: Ring-A-Pop, Basketball Shoot, Fish Pond, Speed Pitch, Football Throw, Ball Run, Candy Wheel, Cream Can Toss and crafts

These games will be available at different times throughout the weekend. Friday, January 24., 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, January 25., 3 to 10 p.m.; Sunday, January 26., noon to 6:30 p.m.

There will also be an auction, raffle, bingo and more community activities.

The raffle has over $32,000 in prizes with the grand prize bringing a 2020 Toyota Camry. Bingo will also have some great cash prizes ranging from $100 to $1000 depending on the day.

“It's all very welcoming,” Diem said. “The idea is to have the community come together; to put aside difference … We all live here together and this is a big winter celebration.”
