FARGO — It may not feel like it right now with this never-ending winter, but Fargo is the sixth happiest city in the United States, according to a recent study by WalletHub.

The personal finance website’s study was done before International Day of Happiness, which will take place next Wednesday, March 20. To rate happy areas around the country, the WalletHub team compared 31 indicators in the 180 largest U.S. cities.

The study says Fargo ranks in the top 20 in categories like unemployment rate (first), adequate sleep rate (fourth), separation and divorce rate (14th) and income growth rate (19th) for a total score of 69.57.

Fargo also ranked 17th in emotional and physical well-being, 20th in income and employment and 24th in community and environment.

Plano, Texas, tops the list with a score of 72.3, followed by Irvine, Calif., Madison, Wis., Fremont, Calif., and Huntington Beach, Calif.

Detroit ranked as the least happy town with a score of 29.19, 10 points lower than the next city, Toledo, Ohio. Charleston, W.V., Birmingham, Ala., and Cleveland, Ohio, rounded out the bottom five.

Other regional cities fared well, including Bismarck in North Dakota (11th), Sioux Falls in South Dakota (15th) and St. Paul and Minneapolis in Minnesota (19th and 26th, respectively).
