FARGO(AP) -- Fargo firefighters succeeded in a life-saving mission -- to rescue a howling dog from an icy river.

A black Labrador named Jack who got by his owner's invisible fence was spotted struggling in the river near El Zagal Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon. Fargo Assistant Fire Chief Larry Schuh says that when firefighters first arrived, they couldn't see the dog -- but they could hear him.

Schuh spotted the pooch about 120 yards away in the water. Jack had struggled to lift his front paws and chest onto an ice shelf, but his back half was submerged.

Firefighters donned water-rescue suits, pulled the lab from the water and reunited him with his owner.

Schuh says Jack was "shivering pretty good," but was in good enough health to go home.
