Pilot, passenger injured in plane crash last week

A pilot and his passenger were injured during a plane crash last week near Dickinson, according to an aviation accident report.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, Nov. 22, around 12:45 p.m. Mountain time north of Dickinson, but the exact location of the accident was not available. The plane was headed for Williston. A preliminary report was made available by the National Transportation Safety Board earlier this week.

According to the report, the accident occurred shortly after takeoff. The pilot noted that the airplane seemed to "lose lift once out of ground effect" and he was not able to maintain control, the report said. The airplane came to rest on the trailer of a truck located in the industrial yard from which the airplane was attempting to take off. The flight was not operated on a flight plan, the report said.

The pilot sustained serious injuries and the passenger sustained minor injuries.

The Piper PA-12 airplane, which was "substantially damaged," was registered to and operated by the pilot as a personal flight.

Cloud conditions were clear and wind speeds were around 24 knots which equates to approximately 27 mph, according to the report's meteorological information. Wind gusts were around 31 knots, or 35 mph.

The NTSB did not travel to the scene of the accident.

More information about the crash was not available Wednesday evening.
