Grand Forks driver killed after vehicle strikes overpass column

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. -- A 30-year-old Grand Forks driver was killed early Thursday morning, Oct. 11, after hitting a support column for an overpass in East Grand Forks.

Marcus Christopher Contreras was southbound at 2:22 a.m. on River Road just east of the Kennedy Bridge when he drove a 2008 Honda Accord onto the center median of the street, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

He then hit the support column of an overpass where River Road goes under Gateway Drive, the release said.

The man was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Ice and snow were a factor in the crash.  It’s unclear if alcohol was involved.
