PIEDMONT — One person died and another person was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday night east of Piedmont.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said the crash occurred at 7:42 p.m. Tuesday, about 8 miles east of Piedmont and about 10 miles north of Rapid City. The crash was at the corner of Galaxy Place and 218th Street.
Authorities said a 1997 GMC pickup was northbound on Galaxy Road near the intersection of 218th Street when the driver lost control on the snow and ice-covered road. The vehicle left the roadway and eventually rolled.
The 40-year-old passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 36-year-old driver received life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Rapid City hospital. It is unknown at this time whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.
The names of those involved in the crash have not been released. The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
