Anti-discrimination bill draws crowd

BISMARCK(AP) -- Dozens of people lined up at the state Capitol to testify on a bill that aims to bar discrimination against gays and lesbians in housing, employment and other areas.

BISMARCK(AP) -- Dozens of people lined up at the state Capitol to testify on a bill that aims to bar discrimination against gays and lesbians in housing, employment and other areas.

Supporters of the bill say it's needed to provide fairness and equal protection. Opponents say it would grant special status to one group of people and lead to reverse discrimination.

The bill has passed the Senate. Wednesday's hearing in front of the House Human Services Committee lasted more than two hours.

Rep. Robin Weisz of Hurdsfield, the committee chairman, says it was important to give people on both sides of the issue a chance to speak. He says the bill needs more discussion before the committee decides whether to endorse it.
